Post Brexit

Since Brexit and the introduction of the Northern Ireland Protocol, movement of goods between GB and NI has become more complex.

Firms involved in movement of goods from GB to NI must be registered with the Northern Ireland Trader Support Service. The companies also need to declare details of goods shipped to Northern Ireland.

You might have to pay duties to HMRC if you are shipping goods of non-EU or UK origin and if they are considered ‘at risk’ of onward movement to the Republic of Ireland.

Whether goods are ‘at risk’ or ‘not at risk’ is determined by the applicable duties and trader certainty of the final destination of the goods.

‘At risk’ goods will be charged the applicable EU duty. ‘Not at risk’ goods will be charged:

• no duty if entering Northern Ireland from free circulation in Great Britain
• UK duty if entering Northern Ireland from outside of both the EU and the UK
• UK duty if entering Northern Ireland from Great Britain and the goods were not in free circulation in Great Britain
